-It is saidthatthis is the mihrab fromwhichZachariah, peace be uponhim, wentthroughtoMary’schamber.
This is probablythereasonforcalling it the mihrab of Zachariah.

- The mihrab is large, wide, anddeep.
- This mihrab is only a signfortheqiblah, since it is nolongerusedbymanypeoplebecause of theavailability of otheralternatives. Omar bin Al-Khattabprayed in it when he enteredthemosque. Also, it is saidthatwas it reallythe mihrab of Dawood, peace be uponhim, and it is the mihrab mentioned in Surat “Sad”, in which Allah says: ” Has theStory of theDisputantsreachedthee? Behold, theyclimbedoverthewall of the mihrab”.
- Itwasrenewed in theFatimidera, duringthereign of theKhalifa al-Zaher – toglorifythereligion of Allah. Itwasrenewedonceagain in thereign of theeleventhMamluk Sultan Hossam Al-Din Lajin.
- The mihrab is namedafter David, peace be uponhim, since it is saidthat it is his mihrab and it waswhere he prayed.
- Also, it is saidthatOmar ibn al-Khattabprayed in it, when he entered Al-Aqsa Mosque. Itwasrenovated in theFatimidandtheMamlukperiods, andwastakencare of throughoutthe rest of theages. It’s a large mihrab that can be seenfrom a distance.
- It is locatedeast of thesouthern fence of the Al-Aqsa mosque.
